E. coli O157 is in the news.

December 12, 2006
This nanobug has been causing lots of trouble recently in the United States.  Foodborne illness has occurred in people who have eaten at Taco Bell and Taco Johns restaurants.  The outbreak investigation is not yet complete.  Last summer there was an outbreak across the USA related to E.coli O157 that resulted in at least 2 deaths.  The investigation traced the source of that outbreak to bagged fresh spinach.  The contamination source was identified and eliminated. Fresh spinach is now believed to be safe to eat again.  However, these fresh leafy vegetables should always be washed before serving raw (even if the bag says that the spinach has already been washed).
